The standard written consent document and process has received substantial criticism. The authors of this article conducted a randomized study to assess the utility of an educational video in preparing adult cancer patients for decisions about clinical trial participation. The video did not measurably improve patients' knowledge about clinical trials; however, it was an important source of information, helped educate families, and enhanced patient communication with their oncology providers. The authors conclude that their findings support the value of multimedia education in the delivery of clinical trial information to prospective participants.
