Maine Earns Its First Two Accreditations

Washington, D.C., September 15, 2011 - The Association for the Accreditation of Human Research Protection Programs, Inc. ® (AAHRPP®), announced today that it has awarded Full Accreditation to the following organizations:
  • Maine Medical Center, Portland, Maine
  • VA Maine Healthcare System, Augusta, Maine
Full Accreditation, the gold standard for human research protections, was awarded at the September meeting of the Council on Accreditation and recognizes an organizational commitment to enhance protections for research participants and promote high-quality research. Maine becomes the 47th state to have accredited organizations.

AAHRPP, since its establishment in 2001, has recognized organizations that demonstrate that the participant safeguards they provide surpass the threshold of state and federal requirements. Accreditation depends on a voluntary, peer-driven educational model that contributes to excellent, ethically sound research by defining standards for organizations that elect to apply for accreditation.
